We can, and we must, end white supremacy! ✊🏿✊🏾✊🏽✊🏼✊🏻 Two things to say here. If you’re black: Please let me know if you have anything I can signal boost for you in my stories, or if you just need a friendly ear. If you’re white: Some of you may already be out there fighting the fight, and good on you. But I imagine many of you are like me, and you’ve had feelings of shame, guilt and embarrassment emerge this week which have left you at times (or always) feeling paralyzed and unsure of what to do. This has led to your silence, which you may know to be complicity, but you feel afraid to speak out for fear of saying the wrong thing in the wrong spaces. Part of how the white supremacist system maintains itself is to not teach white people how to speak about race, so it’s only natural these conversations make you uncomfortable. Let me give you one action item, because while there is of COURSE so much to do, so many places to donate, so many petitions to sign, that’s all surface work that won’t stick without meaningful self-transformation. Read the book “White Fragility.” I’m in the middle of it myself, and it has been hugely helpful in giving me tools for how I can talk about race and work with my guilt to be a better ally. One thing that I think is really important is to let all your ugly feelings (shame, resentment, anger) come up and to get them out so you can sort through where they came from and why you feel that way. Please feel free to message me if you've been feeling paralyzed by conflicting thoughts. I won't judge you, and we can work through it together, as we should: do NOT dump this stuff on the black people in your life - it is not their responsibility to do emotional labor for us. Racism is a problem of whiteness, and again, if you read “White Fragility” as a place to start, you will understand why. Your shame may be resisting the notion, thinking it will make you feel worse, but I promise you, it will only help you to have better tools of understanding on this subject. Again, you can DM me if you have questions or need a friendly ear to help you become un-stuck on this issue: the only real allies are those who know how to take action!

Cubensis Impasto Diptych 🍄🎨 From my animated painting series, these pieces are now open for bidding on @superrare.co! (Link in Bio) I wanted to render these beings in a style that radiates their earthy, swampy nature. The animated paintings I create are a labor of love, and I know they’re a far cry aesthetically from the VHS work I do. I like to think they share a certain ethos, though: in both cases, I’m taking up outmoded forms and combining them with new tech, creating “impossible” outcomes that reflect this weird in-between time we live in. We’ve spent our whole lives swimming around in alllll the forms of the past, searching for the next paradigm shift. A very mushroomy, chthonic concept: regenerating out of decay! I always feel a bit funny sharing the animated paintings, bc I know social media prefers you to pick a lane and stick to it, artistically speaking. But my visions are multifarious, they do not wish to be contained to one aesthetic. Can you relate? Is it crazy to defy your own “brand” so to speak? Depends on who you ask, I suppose. But I hope you enjoy this little break from the norm. Now is the time, babies! 👶🍄

My dreamy wife @bronwynlundberg drew this snazzy mandala portrait of me and my cool friend, my hair! She is WILDLY talented, and I’m so lucky to have someone who sees + celebrates my shapeshifting peacock ways. I started growing my hair out at the beginning of 2019, having not worn it long since 2011. I was having dreams about my hair being loooooong again, and needed to see it through. Couldn’t have imagined a global quarantine would play a part in that vision, but now she sure is long, flowing, and feeling herself (literally, in the illustration! 💁‍♀️)

Happy Mother’s Day to my mom, @yarnia1! We inadvertently did the same photo shoot 25 years apart. A bit of turquoise would satisfy us. I always thought this photo of her was from the Glamour Shots at the mall, but it was a Tina Slusser-Ley production (if you know, you know).

PORTALVISION IS HERE! 👁🌀👁 my 3rd AR Face Filter is my most exciting one yet! You can use it in Insta stories if you follow me, or search for “thesarahshow” in the browse effects tab to find it. The inspiration to make a rainbow feedback eye filter came from the “Pineal Processor” GIF I made for my @print_screen_festival commission back in the Fall. I made that piece all analog, with green contact lenses and chroma keying in After Effects... exciting to now be able to get this effect in Augmented Reality! 😱
